How does acupuncture work?

AcupunctureAcupuncture is one of the two principal components of Chinese Medicine which is based on the belief that the body possesses a network of invisible pathways called meridians. A life-energy or 'Qi' flows along these meridians. Illness occurs when Qi becomes deficient, blocked or stagnant. By placing special needles in specific points along the meridians, acupuncturists aim to restore the balance of energy in the body by clearing the meridians, each of which is associated with different parts of the body or bodily functions. One explanation of how acupuncture works is that a nerve impulse is sent to the spinal cord as a result of the needle insertion. This in turn releases the body's natural self-healing endorphins.

acupuncture pointsThe overall aim of acupuncture treatment is to restore the body's equilibrium. Acupuncture is ideally suited to modern life as physical, emotional and mental are seen as interdependent, and reflect what many people perceive as the connection between the different aspects of their lives.

Acupuncturists are trained to use subtle diagnostic techniques that have been developed and refined for centuries. The focus is not on the illness but on the individual. In addition, all symptoms are seen in relation to each other and not in isolation. As each patient is seen as unique, two people who have the same western diagnosis may well receive different acupuncture treatments.
